Dr. Kunle Hassan is an international acclaimed, Ophthalmic Surgeon with wide experience in Vitreo-Retina Surgery, Glaucoma, Anterior Segment, Cataract and Ocular Plastic Surgery. He graduated from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Nigeria in 1976. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeon, Glasgow, UK, Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologist, UK, Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, Fellow of the World College of Refractive Surgeons, Fellow of the Medical Education UK, and Fellow of the Nigeria Institute of Cost Management.

His training and experience span over Europe, America, Middle East and Africa. He established the Eye Foundation Hospital as the first Private Post-graduate Training institution in Nigeria in 1993 and The Deseret Community Vision Institute in 2006, which is now The Kunle Hassan Eye Foundation Institute. These two institutions have trained over 100 Ophthalmologists Fellows, 100 Community Ophthalmic Nurses and Other middle manpower ophthalmic professionals. He is the pioneer leader of Modern Ophthalmological Practice including Vitreo-Retinal Surgery and Refractive Surgery in Nigeria. Dr. Hassan revolutionized Eye Health Care through Private-Public-Partnership, making quantitative and qualitative Eye care available for both the rich and less privilege. He pioneered the first Private Group Practice in Ophthalmology in Nigeria.

He is the Executive Chairman and Chief Medical Director of the Eye Foundation Hospitals Group, a former Board member of the International Council of Ophthalmology, a member of the International Ophthalmology Council Emeritus Group, Council Member of International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness and Founding President of the African Ophthalmology Council. He is the current President of Africa Ophthalmology Council Foundation.

He has over 150 publications, scientific papers and research papers to his honour. He has over the years received more than 30 academic, professional and society awards for his contribution towards different sphere of life. He was awarded the Rotary Paul Harris Award for the recognition of his contribution to the Rotary eye care projects in Nigeria, even though he is not a Rotarian. He was recently given the reputable Paracecius Award in Germany by the European Business Association, in recognition of the Eye Foundation Social Entrepreneurship Business Model in Eye Care in Nigeria. He is an Otunba of Awujale of Ijebu land. The Eye Foundation Hospital Group has won the award of the Best Eye Care Service Provider in Nigeria for the past 9 consecutive years 2016-2025.

Dr. Kunle Hassan is an astute businessman, an entrepreneur and an educationist per excellence. Dr Hassan was the first African to receive ICO the Mark Tso Golden Apple Award, for demonstrated innovation or exceptional achievements in Ophthalmic Education in September 2019. He was recently awarded, D.Sc. (Honoraria Causa) by the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State in recognition of his immense contribution to healthcare development in Nigeria.

His other corporate appointments include Chairman Board Governance and Personnel Committee and Board Member of Diamond Bank Plc, Nigeria. now (Access Bank Plc), Chairman, Board of Directors Summit Healthcare Group of Companies, Board member of Health Partners (HMO), Board member of Global Business Ally Foundation, Deseret International Hospital, Impact Alliance Network (Dubai, UEA) and Chairman SHEDCo Ltd. UK and SHECO Premium Ltd. He is the Chairman of the Lagos Business School, Advisory Board on Healthcare Initiatives. He is the current Chairman of the College of Medicine University of Lagos, Board of Governors.

His present special interest is in Community Eye Health, Upscaling Sustainability of Eye Care Training and Management through the establishment of a Professorial Chair in Ophthalmology and the establishment of the KHEFA International Institute of Eye Health.
